A well-designed public space demands meaningful, frequent activation.
Downtown Indy, Inc. (DII) and the Indiana War Memorials Commission (IWMC) is focused on furthering our city’s innovative urban identity through memorable opportunities for engagement on Monument Circle.
With 28,000 residents, 150,000 employees and nearly 30 million visitors annually, DII and IWMC understand the importance of activating Indy’s most iconic and trafficked public space, Monument Circle.
To continue the tradition of celebration, DII and IWMC plan to award eight (8) arts and culture organizations the ability to program Monument Circle as part of Shining a Light: Arts on the Circle in March – November 2020. Arts on the Circle is designed to infuse arts and culture into the lives of the hundreds of thousands that engage with Monument Circle annually.
The goal of Arts on the Circle is to provide the public access to experiences that might have a considerable travel/financial barrier. By bringing arts and culture front and center to Downtown’s most accessible gathering place, DII and IWMC hope to engage new audiences in the exciting and meaningful work of our arts community.
Inspired applications will include:
Thoughtful activation designed to increase traffic to Monument Circle
The ability for audiences to engage in diverse, cultural happenings
The creation of inclusive an environment and experience
Events designed in the spirit of collaboration
We imagine this series to spur purposeful partnerships that create surprising synergy. Think multiple arts organizations and community partners coming together to celebrate the city’s Bicentennial, a sports organizations partnering with local artists to bring an annual season kick-off event new life or a performing arts institution teaming up with business partners to engage the public in a new exhibit.
